Plot Summary:The story is set at the beginning of the 20th century in Sicily. Salvatore, a very poor farmer, and a widower, decides to emigrate to the US with all his family, including his old mother. Before they embark, they meet Lucy. She is supposed to be a British lady and wants to come back to the States. Lucy, or Luce as Salvatore calls her, for unknown reasons wants to marry someone before to arrive to Ellis Island in New York. Salvatore accepts the proposal. Once they arrive in Ellis Island they spend the quarantine period trying to pass the examinations to be admitted to the States. Tests are not so simple for poor farmers coming from Sicily. Their destiny is in the hands of the custom officers.

有些导演拍的电影，没啥毛病但索然无味；还有一些导演，毛病不少但灵气十足。此人就是后者，有点库斯图里卡的意思。
关于移民，关于梦想，关于希望与混乱。每个人的一生也许都在经历不断失去与得到，人生的无奈在于很多时候你并没有太多的选择权，只能接受命运的安排。但只要你不断努力，总有一天能推开那扇属于你的金色大门，守得云开见月明。
我没有完全看懂，我也有些拙见，有的东西即使时代变迁也是磨灭不了的，有些思想是根深蒂固的，而有的包容也只是对强者的包容。对外者来说或许是不尽人情的，但对内者或许是需要的，资本家永远是利己至上的吧。其实到结尾也没有人真正知道金色大门后的世界到底有多美好，有的人梦着加州牛奶河，有的站在毛玻璃背后，有的人千方百计想要踏进新世界，有的人挽尊重回旧世界。
